Inside the grounds of Villa Eilenroc, the town's villa of honour at the tip of the Cap, a newly fitted tea room serves drinks and pastries in the middle of the park – three days a week.
Why VERA picked it
The most civilised pause on the Cap: a cup of tea in a 19th-century estate the town opened to everyone, reachable on foot from the coastal path. Worth planning a walk around.
A villa given to the town
In 1860 a wealthy Dutchman, Hugh-Hope Loudon, bought land at the far end of the Cap and built a grand residence, finished in 1867. He named it Eilenroc – his wife Cornélie's name, reversed. In 1927 it passed to the American businessman Louis-Dudley Beaumont and his wife, a young soprano, who redecorated it with contemporary artists and filled it with 18th-century furniture and paintings. In 1982 Madame Beaumont left the whole estate to the town, on condition that its gardens be opened to the public. They have been since 1988.
The tea room
The tea room is a recent addition, set in the heart of the park. The tourist office describes a short card of drinks and sweet things – exactly what you want after the walk along the shore. It is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 10:00 to 16:30.
Making a morning of it
- Walk the coastal path from La Garoupe; it ends beside the villa on Avenue Mrs L. D. Beaumont.
- On Saturdays the villa's first floor is also open, from 10:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30.
- The estate has a rose garden and olive grove to wander.

| Worth knowing | For fire safety, the villa closes to the public for the whole of August. In that month only the tea-room area stays open, reached by the Chemin des Douaniers. Hours are set by the town and can change, so check before a special trip. |
